Children of the Tsunami

HIKKADUA, SRI LANKA

A few weeks after the Tsunami hit, a team from Spirit Aid was in the South of the country helping beleagured and forgotten communities with aid of rice, medicines, mosquito nets, cooking pots /utensils, clothing and bedding.

We built a fishing boat named 'Spirit Aid' which provides for 10 families-up to 150 people.

We kick started a dozen small businesses from a Fruit Stall holder to a Tuk-Tuk Taxi driver.

The 'Lake School Orphanage' is home to around 75 boys.We established a crop garden, arranged for livestock to be bought and arranged for a local farmer to instruct the boys in crop growing and animal husbandry. The produce is consumed by the boys and any excess is sold to the local community.

Two women were appointed to be live-in 'House Mothers'.
